Susanna works with non-conventional applications of fabrics in the design and prototyping of soft goods that incorporate hard components at Terrazign Inc., an industrial design firm in Portland. She has an undergraduate degree in biology, a Masters in architecture, and a keen interest in textiles, particularly wool felt. Her grad school thesis involved taking felting classes in Mongolia and proposed felt as a viable contemporary cladding for both the human body and architectural interior spaces. Over the last five years she has collaborated with Houminn Practice on a modular structural wall system for which she designed and produced the felt interior cladding. She also collaborates with Kari Merkl, another local Portland designer. Together they have designed and built furniture pieces and, for Relish Design Store in Portland, a series of molded felt panels. In her studio she currently experiments with fabric dying techniques.
