Matthew Stadler is a writer who has also become involved with the creation of new infrastructures to support writing and civic engagement in the arts. His books include five novels, for which he was awarded Guggenheim, Ingram-Merrill, and United States Artists Fellowships as well as the Whiting Writers Award and many other prizes, and several collections of essays on politics, art, and urbanism. He was co-founder of Publication Studio and Clear Cut Press, two independent publishing projects, as well as "the back room," a peripatetic series of dinners introducing new writing and art to loud, drunken audiences at well-served tables throughout Portland over the last seven years.
