Untarnished challenges idealized notions of newness and the pristine. Utilizing intentional deterioration to collapse time, I am referencing the past, present, and future of the cloth simultaneously. Holes and stains on the fabric create a likeness of age by highlighting traces of time. The cloth captures small moments of endurance, bringing to light the beauty of something that has lived.
For this project, I created woven cloth with wire embedded into it, then transformed the fibers and metal together through a process of oxidation. This transformation represents the things that our bodies go through everyday. We, as humans, are constantly subjected to forces that wear us down. My work seeks to remind us that even when we become threadbare, we are not defeated.
