Working in the fields of art and fashion design, Abbie employs laborious construction methods to explore process and surface definition. As a visual artist with a sartorial background, Abbie engages the language of pattern making and sewing construction in her studio practice. She traverses the history and capacity of sewing as a means to engage sustained observation and physical resonance in her work. She was born and raised in the mountain west, and has translated the monumentality of the surrounding landscapes into her imposing sculptures. Simultaneously rooted in fashion design, she has participated in multiple fashion shows, including Portland Fashion Week, and has worked as stylist and fit tailor on various campaigns including Pendleton, TimBuk2, Wrangler and Esprit.
Abbie holds a BFA from the University of Wyoming, a Post-Baccalaureate from Maryland Institute College of Art, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has exhibited throughout North America, including the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Portland Art Museum, Reading Public Museum, Missoula Museum of Art, and the Craft and Folk Art Museum. Her sculptures are in the permanent collections of the Portland Art Museum and the Scottsdale Museum of Art. She has been the recipient of a Metcalf Award in Art, the Contemporary Northwest Artist Award, and a Wyoming Arts Council Fellowship. Abbie has made Portland her home since fall of 2015.
